Who is Dr. Sergi Orel from The Stars My Destination and what is their importance?

Dr. Sergi Orel is the pharmacist's mate on the Vorga, Foyle tracks Orel down and tries to extract information on why the Vorga abandoned him aboard the Nomad. Orel dies after a sympathetic block is provoked by the questioning.
