What does Jared see when he hears a noise and how does he lose his light?

As Jared is alone and waiting for his siblings to send the dumbwaiter up again, he hears a noise. He is shocked to find a message scrawled in the dust, telling him to watch his back. In his shock, Jared moves too fast and causes his candle to go out.
