Who is Byron from Lucinda's Secret and what is their importance?

Byron is a griffin. The children discover Byron in the Fantastical World. They then hide him on the Spiderwick Estate, where they keep him a secret from their mother. The children feed Byron meat while he heals from previous injuries.
