Why does Thea refuse to take money from Ottenburg?

Thea refuses to take money from Ottenburg because she worries that doing so will make her appear as if she is a "kept" woman. Even though they have a romance, Thea knows that Ottenburg is still married and she does not want an image of impropriety for either of them.
