Why did Gretel feel that to live and work in Wyoming was to lose distinction of background and foreground?

Gretel felt that a person lost sense of space in Wyoming because the landscape was so wide open. A person could look for miles and miles around and see nothing but empty space. Because of that it was easy to forget which way was which.
