How did those working in the lambing shed try to make a ewe believe that an orphaned lamb was hers?

When a lamb had lost its mother and a ewe had lost her baby the workers would try to pair the lamb up with another ewe. They would do this by shearing the coat off of the dead lamb and covering the surviving lamb with it. That was done in the hope that the ewe would claim the orphaned lamb as hers.
