What happens to Danny when he goes out to play in the snow near the topiary?

The topiary lions come to life, chasing Danny as he tries to get back to the Overlook porch. Near exhaustion, Danny collapses onto the porch, banging his face. Jack opens the door to find Danny on the porch with his snow pants ripped below the knee and scratches on his calves.
