Why do the Lawrence Stern paintings have such an impact on Noel and Nancy?

Noel is turned on to the idea of selling Lawrence Stern's paintings and sketches at the same time that Nancy finds out the general financial value of the paintings themselves. Interestingly, both siblings will play off of each other in an attempt to get their mother to sell these valuables for their own personal greed.
