Carr moved from the busy city of Boston to the mountains of Colorado, where there was no cell phone service and the Internet connection was much slower than it had been at his home in Boston. He also canceled some of his social media accounts, shut down his RSS reader, and cut back on his email application. Carr took all these steps in an effort to stay focused while he wrote The Shallows.
