V.C. Edwards represents the old guard of evolutionary thinkers. His ideas, which were famously set out in "Animal dispersion in relation to social behavior", were published in 1962, and attempted to prove that animals behave in ways that work for the good of the entire species. He even believed that animals were able to control themselves in mating or breeding, so that the greatest number of them might thrive and survive. Dawkins believes this theory is popular because humans want to believe kindness and goodness and altruism are natural in the world. According to Dawkins, this theory is preposterous in that there is no way such behaviors could have evolved.
