What metaphors are used in The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd?

I think that the bees are a metaphor for the matriarchal communal living that takes place at the Boatwright farm. The bees exist in harmony. They revere their queen bee just as the women revere Black Mary at the farm.
