Who is The dog from The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 3/4 and what is their importance?

Dog is Adrian's dog..... he doesn't have a name. Over the course of the novel, we see that dog has a tendency to run off...... he is also incarcerated in the coal shed on a regular basis.
