THe tone is often both subjective and objective. Some of the characters - for example the doctors and the lawyers - view meaning as essentially objective. Will is mentally ill because of a pH imbalance that must be monitored and treated. They do not view Will's fugues as rich subjective experiences full of personal meaning, but as aberrations of thought caused by a disease process that must be controlled. Allison's bipolar behavior should be treated by electroconvulsive therapy. Will's golf slice should be analyzed and corrected.
