In "Section 1: Part 4", what does the narrator say about crying as a child?

The narrator says that when he cried as a child he assumed his mother would just leave him alone instead of commenting on it. When the narrator describes a time he was crying over not being able to know Mrs. Grace, this is exactly what his mother does.
