The Scarlet Letter
Why does Hawthorne say that it is ironic that Pearl is such a beautiful child, in Chapter 6?

Pearl is a lovely baby, which is ironic for Hawthorne because she is the representation of Hester's ugly and shameful sin. Because she is the product of adultery, she should be--like the scarlet letter--a more visible representation of that ugly sin.
