Dimmesdale's guilt is amplified by the power Chillingworth wields. Chillingworth is able to frighten him with a "throb of agony" or "at the waving of a magician's wand." Dimmesdale becomes very timid and weak, especially around Chillingworth. Dimmesdale become ever more guilty and eventually tries to expose his sin in public.
