Hester sees that during their time apart, Chillingworth has become a very different man. Before their marriage he was an intellect..... quiet, somber, and soft-spoken. His time in the colonies, however, has changed that, as now he seems angry, fierce and hardened. Hester notes that Chillingworth "was a striking evidence of man's faculty of transforming himself into a devil."
