In Chapter 14, why is Chillingworth in the woods?

Chillingworth is in the woods gathering medicinal plants, herbs and roots in Chapter 14. Since he is a doctor, he needs to gather herbs. He is also spooky, and Hawthorne putting him in the woods helps demonstrate this mood/tone in his character.
