How does Dimmesdale respond to his growing guilt? How does he punish himself?

Dimmesdale's response to his growing guilt is to punish him self through self-flagellation, that is, beating himself with a whip to repent. He also will eventually in Chapter 12 go to the scaffold and try to publicly confess.
