Describe symbolism in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

The Scarlet Letter is supposed to be a symbol of shame for the sin of adultery. Hester's patience and humble charity to the poor later, in the eyes of many, turn the Scarlet Letter to a symbol of piety and charity.
