Halt tells Will that the Rangers were created as an intelligence force who were like spies, gathering information about all sorts of activities and reporting it to Araluen's King. They patrolled the kingdom and beyond its borders, watching and listening. They were also part time officials, keeping the law and enforcing it. In time of war the Ranger acts as a scout for the troops. Halt says that Morgarath and his Wargals are enemies of the kingdom and it was a Ranger who warned the kingdom of Morgarath's attack, years before it happened.
