The Road has no actual chapters or chapter numbers. How do you relate the chapter abstract numbers to the book?

I suppose if the earth is dead or on its last gasps of life, chapters and numbers do not really matter. The narrative might be seen as a poetic postscript to fallen man and the planet he has destroyed.
