Why, in Chapter 10, does Brian believe that the rain won't bother him or Derek?

Brian doesn't believe the rain will bother them since the overhang faces south and they are on the south side of the hill. They had already had an evening of soft rain with none getting into the shelter. So with the storm blowing rain away from the opening, they should stay dry and safe.
