Why does Brian talk to Derek when he is in the coma?

Brian remembers a story his mother read about a girl who had been in a coma for months. When the girl finally awoke, she said she could hear and understand what was said around her even though she couldn't respond. So Brian talks to Derek in case he is able to hear and understand.
