Why does Brian decide that he was foolish to leave the lake and trust the map?

When it is light enough to see, Brian studies the map and discovers the lake he drifted into is not on the map. That makes him realize the map could have other errors. The distance to the trading post could be wrong or the trading post might not be there at all. Brian thinks he was foolish to leave the lake and trust the map.
