Who is Derek Holtzer from The River and what is their importance?

Derek Holtzer is a psychologist, employed by the government at the survival school. He has never had to survive in the wilderness and failed his attempt to pass the text at the school where he is employed. It was Derek, however, that was chosen to accompany Brian back to the wilderness because the school's biggest interest was the psychological aspect of survival.
