What happens to Brian as the raft goes through the rapids?

The raft hits two boulders, and Brian is thrown from the raft. He fights and claws his way to breathe, but the water keeps slamming him down. He brings his head up for one breath, then he is driven back under, smashing his head and losing consciousness.
