What does Brian do to protect Derek from the sun?

Brian decides to make a canopy to protect Derek from the sun. He paddles to shore and jams the raft into some willows and grass. Brian takes a half an hour to use some green willows and swatches of grass to make a crude awning over Derek. It doesn't cover Derek, completely, but keeps most of him in the shade.
