How is the site selected that Derek and Brian go to?

Derek and Brian pick a lake about a hundred miles east of the lake where Brian had crashed the first time. They wanted to use a different lake, so the experience would be new to Brian. They also wanted a place that approximated the same terrain, altitude and forest of the original crash.
