The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Describe the picture that is in the link and try to relate it to Coleridges poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
The image I see is a perfect illustation of a gothic type of romanticism that Coolridge depicts in his poem. The setting is perfectly Romantic: natural, awesome, and lonely. It also takes place at a liminal time of day, either sunrise or sunset, to emphasize the fact that the scene also balances the physical and the metaphysical, as well as the natural and the spiritual. Note also how the humans in the picture are dwarfed by nature's sublimity so that they are noticeable only upon close inspection, and even then are barely distinguishable from the gravestones.
I see a wonderful & capturing illustration of a type of gothic romanticism which Coolridge brings in his poem. It is a very romantic setting; private, and nature-filled. It takes place at an amazing time of day, I believe a sunset, but it could be a sunrise, and this emphasizes the fact that the scene balances physical + metaphysical (also spiritual and natural). Also, the humans in the picture are impeded by nature's sublimity so they are only able to be noticed upon close observation (inspection). Even then they are barely able to be distinguished from the gravestones.
