The Rifle

Most gunsmiths would test their barrels early in the manufacturing process, to avoid wasting time finishing faulty barrels. Cornish McManus does not test his barrel until the entire gun is finished. Why?

The book does not state why, but it infers that McManus is afraid to treat his "sweet" rifle as a typical rifle during manufacture. Instead, he treats is as something of a mystical or religious object.
