Babylon is surrounded by desert landscapes and many of the tales told throughout the book are told while people are gathered around a campfire or riding through the desert. Dabasir works as a camel tender in the desert and must find his way across the desert in order to return to Babylon. Sharru Nada relates the tale of his own rise from slavery while riding through the desert on his way to Babylon.
