The judge happily invites Michael to speak with him although he thinks the conversation is nothing more than a general talk about the trial. The judge makes chitchat, and asks him questions about his classes and his aspirations toward becoming a lawyer. The judge then tells Michael about his life, and thinks that this should suffice their discussion. Michael leaves without ever bringing up Hanna or her illiteracy to the judge.
