What does Michael notice about himself after he is taken to the hospital with fever?

Michael notices that the numbing feeling he had before and during the trial is gone. Michael says that all of the questions and fears, horror and pain he had felt before the trial are now back, and that the numbness had to "overwhelm" his body before he could get those feelings back.
