Michael is offered a research job with a legal history professor that pleases him greatly. Though Gertrud thinks negatively of the position and says it is an escape from reality, Michael cherishes the escape and learns to love a career in legal history. Michael believes he is building bridges between the past and the present, and relishes the knowledge he gains from studying the past and making connections to the present.
