Michael compares the trial to being a prisoner who becomes accustomed to his daily life, even though each day brings new horrors to light. Michael notes that, like a prisoner, he becomes numb to everything around him, indifferent and detached from feeling anything for either the defendants or the plaintiffs, the victims.
