The memory is about one winter morning when the narrator awakens in a cold, unheated room. He remembers the warm kitchen and hot stove, where his mother always had a basin of water heating. She would bathe and dress him in the warmth, and remembers it feeling so good. The narrator draws parallels to being "spoiled" by his mother and then being "spoiled" by Frau Schmitz.
