The five women were former guards at a small concentration camp near Cracow, and all had been transferred there from Auschwitz in 1944, due to the fact that other guards had been killed or injured in a factory explosion. The indictments mainly concern the night of a bombing, when the troops had locked the female prisoners inside an abandoned church. Errant bombs hit the priest's quarters, where the guards were staying, and the church's steeple, trapping the prisoners inside. The guards could have unlocked the doors and freed the prisoners, though they chose not to, in effect, killing the prisoners inside.
