Michael remembers his last years in high school and first years in university as happy. He describes those years as "effortless," because he had no difficulty with the exams or with relationships with his classmates. Michael says that everything was "easy, and nothing weighed heavily." He describes adopting a facade of arrogance, as though nothing affects him at all.
