While being questioned by the judge as to what exactly happened at the selections, Hanna redirects the questions onto the judge. Hanna first tells the judge that she did have knowledge that she was sending prisoners to their death, but that by some leaving, more room was made for new people. The judge then asks, "so because you wanted to make room, you said [you and you and you] have to be sent back to be killed?", to which Hanna answers "So what would you have done?" This is not normal for a German trial, but since Hanna had posed such a daring question, the judge has to answer.
