Gertrud and Michael meet at the ski lodge where he is vacationing with his classmates. Gertrud is also a law student. Gertrud and Michael began to work as clerks together, and Gertrud became pregnant, so they get married. Michael describes Gertrud as smart, efficient, and loyal, and if their life involved running a farm together, they could have been very happy. However, Michael continually feels that Gertrud is wrong for him, and they divorce when their daughter, Julia, is five.
