Michael is in the woods when he has an epiphany about Hanna. There are no special markers, but Michael is on a path that takes him up mountains, passes a spring, and takes him under dark trees. The epiphany is that Hanna could not read nor write, she was illiterate. This is the reason that Hanna has people read to her, and why she had been so upset when Michael left her with a note (which she could not understand). It is also the reason Hanna does not want to be promoted at the streetcar company and has admitted to writing the report in court, because she does not want to be exposed as illiterate.
