Although Michael is happy, why does he also feel sorry for Hanna?

Michael feels that Hanna has led a failed or delayed life. Michael thinks that although Hanna's newly acquired ability to write is a happy occasion, it has come too late and with far too great of a price. Michael is unsure if "late" really is better than "never."
