What altar does the Baron build before dawn?

Before the sun rose, Baron built a fire for an altar to Heaven and love. Into the fire, he put 12 French Romances, three garters, and a half pair of gloves--old trophies from former loves. He started the fire with old love letters and breathed on it to start the flames.
