How does Mama make extra money for the family in the novel, The Queen of Palmyra?

Mama sells cakes to make extra money for the family. She enjoys baking and her cakes are known as the best in the neighborhood. Mama bakes at night, banging pots and pans into the early morning. Florence often helps her mother bake cakes and when Mama is admitted into the mental institution, attempts to fill the cake orders herself, almost burning the house down in the process.
