Why does Chris move away from the farm in the novel, The Queen of Dirt Island?

Chris and Doreen live in the farmhouse together until Doreen kills herself. Unable to bear the loneliness of staying in the house alone, Chris moves off the land and ends up selling the property to Richard. When Richard later gets into legal trouble, Chris gets the farm back.
