Why does Julia avoid asking Mary if she is ready to push?

Mary is young, shy, and it is her first pregnancy. Julia does not ask her if she is ready to push in case she accidentally puts the idea in Mary's head. Mary is the meek kind who would tell one whatever she thought one wanted to hear.
