What happened to Groyne's family? What does this say about him now?

Years ago, before the war, Groyne lost his whole family to the typhus. He very well could have become a drunk or miscreant but has chosen to spend the rest of his days helping out at the hospital and uses euphemisms and song to deal with heartache and loss.
