How does Julia describe what she calls a “weird malady?”

Julia calls the current flu a "weird malady." It takes months for the flu to defeat some patients, sneaking up on them by way of pneumonic complications. Others succumb to it in a matter of hours. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason why some live for awhile and other die quickly.
