What is the point of having Franz talk to pigeons?

The reason Franz speaks and sings to his pigeons is meant to not only illustrate the isolation of the man, but to make a point about his mental instability. In no way can Hitler be made a sympathetic character and Mel Brooks illustrates this point by having the author of such an attempt an insane parody of a fanatical Nazi.
